Climate change adaptation can be very easy and start right on your own doorstep. That is why the district of Minden-Lübbecke has launched the Climate Trees campaign. Citizens were able to order a “climate tree” free of charge in September 2021 and were advised on planting and care (prerequisite is a plot of land in the structural interior). The climate trees were a complete success! Due to the high demand, the project budget was exhausted after only a few days. That is why the campaign will be launched again next year.

Trees not only produce oxygen, but also bind CO2 from the atmosphere and settle it in their wood for a long time. They thus serve as a natural greenhouse gas sink and actively contribute to climate protection. Trees are also important in terms of climate adaptation, because they provide shade and cooling through evaporative cold, regulate precipitation and protect against erosion and flooding. They also provide food, habitat and shelter for animals and filter dust and particles from the air.

The district of Minden-Lübbecke supports the planting of trees by private individuals on their properties in the structural interior. The plants are acquired by the district administration and planted and cared for by the participating citizens. These prove the planting uncomplicated by a photo. Interested parties can choose from a list of seven tree species. There are trees for the small garden, such as the pear variety “Delicious of Chaneux”, to giant trees, such as the grape oak, for which there must be enough space. The Environment Agency provides information on planting and care and is available if you have any questions.
